3 Wrinkle Types Associated with Facial Aging

Not all Physical Wrinkles are the Same but Some Can be Prevented

Aging comes along sooner rather than later, and brings baggage in the form of wrinkles. Some are not preventable while others are. Learn about the 3 types of wrinkles.

Wrinkles – everyone is talking about them and more specifically, how to keep them away. Anti-aging treatments, from holistic home prevention methods to clinical injections at a medical spa and of course, drastic surgical solutions from plastic surgery have become a national pastime.

In the 21st century, adults (and even many teens) are obsessed with outer beauty, and how to slow the clock on the physical aging process. Truly, no one can prevent aging but understanding the different types of wrinkles and what causes each kind can be a good starting point to slowing the clock a little.

Though they are all unsightly, troublesome and unwanted, wrinkles actually come in three different types – dynamic, static and folds. Knowing the differences between them is essential for deciding how to treat facial wrinkles, and possibly prevent or delay the formation of new wrinkles.

Dynamic Wrinkles

The first type of wrinkles is called a dynamic wrinkle, which is most commonly caused by repeatedly contracting muscles through facial expressions. Muscle contractions make lines between the muscles, causing dynamic wrinkles to form. A few common examples:

  • Frowning or furrowing the brow contracts certain muscles that create those deep wrinkle lines between the eyebrows.
  • Raising of the eyebrows contracts muscles that, over time, etch those horizontal wrinkle lines across the forehead.
  • Smiling and squinting bunch the skin on the cheeks and near the outer corners of the eyes, making the wrinkled lines we commonly refer to as crow’s feet.

Static Wrinkles

The second type are known as static wrinkles, which come from the loss of elasticity due to age and lifestyle. Smoking, sun exposure, poor nutrition, or prolonged dynamic wrinkling can all cause static wrinkles. Heredity plays a part in the formation of static wrinkles also. Static wrinkles are always visible and do not require contractions to be seen the way a dynamic wrinkle does. Unfortunately, over time, most dynamic wrinkles become static wrinkles and are visible all the time. A few common examples of static wrinkles:

  • The crepe-ish look around the eyes that usually begins in the mid 30s and continues to progress with age.
  • That crosshatched appearance of the skin around the cheek areas that starts to show up in the late 30s and gets progressively more pronounced with age.

Wrinkle Folds

The third type of wrinkles are referred to as wrinkle folds. In most cases, wrinkle folds are caused by the loss of subcutaneous facial fat and sagging of the underlying facial structures. This is truly the most common type of wrinkles from the natural progression of age. The most common one that people can relate to:

  • The deep grooves that run between the nose and mouth known as the nasal labial groove.

Some Wrinkles Can be Prevented

Although no one can stop the clock and turn back the aging process, there are many things that can be done to slow down the process. Aside from wrinkle treatments, there are preventative measures such as leading a healthy lifestyle, taking care of the skin over a lifetime, and trying to lead a life that is as stress free as possible.
