People can usually feel depression coming on long before it's in full swing. These tips are offered as a way to combat depression before it takes over completely.

Once depression sets in full force it can feel impossible to function on a day to day basis. Medication can help somewhat, but it's not healthy to always rely on a pill. The trick of course is to not let the depression get that far.

Signs of Depression

Below are some of the signs of depression moving in.

  • Change in sleeping patterns. While some people can't sleep, others are unable to pry themselves out of bed.
  • Change in eating habits. Again, this is different for each person. Some people eat for comfort and others can't work up an appetite.
  • Lack of motivation, when every day chores seem like astronomical accomplishments.
  • Bouts of crying, when the tears flow for no apparent reason.

These are just a few of the more obvious signs of depression that people should pay attention to. Below is a collection of tips for fighting depression. If the signs of depression are there then it never hurts to take a step towards preventing further damage.

Tips for Fighting Depression

These are some tips that can help lead toward a healthier inner feeling. The idea is to start small and work up to larger goals. Some days just getting out of bed can seem like the hardest thing in the world to do. Hopefully these tips can help alleviate some of that burden.

  1. Set small goals such as making the bed. While this can seem easy for some, for those going through depression this can be a major accomplishment.
  2. Communicate with the outside world at least once a day. It's easy to get stuck in rut when the world outside seems distant.
  3. Make a daily to do list. This helps maintain focus on something other than problems in life.
  4. Bring flowers inside. The very smell and sight of them can be uplifting.
  5. Get a low maintenance pet. Sometimes being responsible for someone or something besides oneself can provide limited motivation. Make sure it's low maintenance so the burden of life is not further increased.
  6. Go for a walk. The exercise alone with help to stimulate nerve cells and give an energetic boost.
  7. Do crafts. Even if the craft involves simply throwing balloons full of paint at a wall, being creative provides an outlet to mixed emotions.
  8. Avoid emotional vampires. There are people who seem to drain others of their energy and will to live. Being around them is exhausting. Avoid these people at all costs!
  9. Take up a new hobby. A new hobby means time spent learning new things. This stimulates the mind and relieves it from dwelling on well worn paths.
  10. Make a change. Whether it is a new hairstyle or wardrobe or simply decorating a room, whatever the depressed person has been doing isn't working. The easiest answer is to try something new!

Hopefully these tips help. Of course, paying a visit to the family doctor may be in order as well! Anyone who has been through depression knows how hard it can be to get up after the fall. The key is to not fall completely but to stop it when it's on its way.
