How to Find Relief from the Daily Stress of Life

Finding the Causes of Stress and Tension for Better Health

Sep 1, 2009 Mario Carini

Life today demands high performance. Stress is a major health concern for many. Finding the causes and eliminating them can help restore balance and make life enjoyable.

Everyone lives under stress and tension from the moment they wake up to the moment they retire. Some find it impossible to handle the worries and fear that daily living poses. While others, under the same pressures, thrive. Both handle stress differently. Everyone handles tension and stress in different ways, some beneficial, others destructive.

There is no one way to relieve stress that works for everyone. What works for one individual simply won't work for another. The first step to stress control is knowing what is causing undue stress and address it pro-actively, rather than resort to temporary measures that only bring forgetfulness.

There are many causes of stress. It can come from physical, mental or psychological factors. A person who constantly fears the worst in everything creates the chemical interactions that often lead to mental and physical fatigue.

Stress, by itself, is a necessary part of life. Without it, there would be little incentive to change a bad situation and improve lifestyle for overall health and well being. It's when stress becomes a routine event, that it becomes chronic and begins to produce illness.

To handle stress better, it's necessary to eliminate the stressors that are causing undue stress before it becomes chronic.

A Boring Routine

As a general rule, man is meant to be active. But engaging in constant activity day in and day out without a break, without any moment to relax can have a devastating effect on body and mind. Many people work the whole week, without any time for relaxation. If being on the go is producing stress, it's necessary to change the routine and do something different. Anything that breaks the routine can lessen tension and put the zest back into life.

Lack of Goal Setting

Many people feel that rushing about senselessly putting out the latest fires and meeting deadlines is moving them forward to a life of accomplishment. Unfortunately, time moves on and eventually they find that what they hoped for was never reached. People must have a goal to strive for. Without a goal, life makes no sense. Having a goal provides the zest and incentive to reach the goal. Both of them keep stress and tension at bay.

Noisy Environments

A noise filled environment creates stress and tension. Whether it's in a busy factory line, a high tech laboratory or using jackhammers on the job, one of the best relievers for many is just to retire to a quiet room to meditate and pray. Such people need more quiet time to bring the body to equilibrium. Things like hang gliding or gardening can be noiseless and pleasurable activities.

Lifestyle Habits

Tensions often arise from the habits that have been adopted over the years. They're not easy to see.

Many people seek for relief from nervous tension through smoking and excessive drinking. Unfortunately, they may mask the pressures of life and produce forgetfulness, they eventually increase stress levels and add to them through health problems. The best course of action is to cut out the smoking habit and curtail drinking unless alcoholism is a serious problem.

Many people don't get enough sleep and haven't learned to relax to get a good night sleep. That creates fatigue and worry as they try to cope with the stress of their jobs.

Eating is another habit that can lead to physical and mental problems. Too many eat on the run and eat the wrong kind of food. Improper diets do nothing but elevate worries and health problems. When people eat, they eat standing and eat far too much without taking time to chew their food properly. Gastrointestinal problems result which do nothing to help live through a hectic day.

While stress cannot be eliminated altogether, knowing the causes will eliminate a great portion of the tension that so many must live through every day.
