More children are now diagnosed with stress related illnesses and parents are looking for natural solutions. Qigong is a simple, enjoyable solution.

As adults become more aware of their own unhealthy habits they also begin to notice what’s happening with their children. Skeptical of treating childhood stress with pills, many parents are turning to natural methods for restoring tranquility. Hyperactivity, lack of focus and concentration, nervousness, short-attention span, and dramatic mood swings are all symptoms of children who are under stress. Of course, there are many more, each pinpointing the effects of an overwhelmed child.

Too Much Information

Sources of stress for children can include long hours at school, too much homework, excessive enrollment in extra-curricular activities, insufficient or inadequate diet, emotional instability at home, bullying, insufficient attention from loved ones, social pressure, excessive hours at the computer or in front of the TV, and so much more. The effect of too much input is not giving the mind time to process the experiences thereby creating a constant state of “floating”. This floating, described as “not connecting” or “not grounding” is a defense mechanism children learn to create if required, but eventually that “deflect it” mentality will take it’s toll on the bodies energy level.

Qigong for Kids

It’s very easy to restore peace and tranquility to a child’s mind. One method for helping them cope is through qigong exercise. The graceful movements of qigong matched with proper breathing and imaginative visualization provide simple and fun ways for children to relax. Qigong has many styles that are kid friendly like the 5 Animal Frolic. This style of qigong is based on 5 animals (bear, tiger, crane, snake, monkey) and guides children through movements ranging from slow to fast, easy to complex. As they move through the imagery of each animal and what they represent (big, fierce, balanced, flexible, fast) a rounded emotional experience is evoked. By the end of the routine children enjoy both a release of stress and the presence of that natural “feel-good” sensation.

Within the hundreds of styles of qigong, children will find many that catch their interest. Take time to find an instructor who has experience teaching children and can work with the particular personality of your child. Qigong classes for children should be in the range of 20 to 40 minutes and should foster an open non-competitive environment. Classes for children usually incorporate meditation time as well, giving kis a life-long tool of introspection and contemplation. Within qigong you’ll find an activity which is a positive experience, giving your child movement, fun, relaxation, empowerment and joy.
