For any new mother, it is a wondrous time that takes a lot of adjustment. Getting back to pre-pregnancy health, both physically and mentally can be challenging.

One of the most exciting and magical times in life for any woman is becoming a new mother. The glow and miracle of pregnancy, is followed by the miracle of childbirth and the marvel of having been a major part in bringing a tiny little being into the world. From the first day baby comes home from the hospital, it is important to understand the importance of the mental and physical health of the new mother, and how the two are inextricably connected.

Physical Fitness for a New Mommy

Following pregnancy, a woman wants to shed the pounds and return to her pre-pregnancy weight. At times, this can be a difficult goal to achieve. Baby requires so much attention, and when the baby is sleeping, mommy needs to sleep also. Breastfeeding also can stall weight loss goals for some new mothers.

Getting moving as quickly after the baby is born is the best way to start shedding the baby pounds. Take the baby for a walk several times each day. Instead of buying a regular stroller, spend a little extra and invest in a jogger style stroller so that when the time is right, leisurely walking can be stepped up to speed walking and then gentle jogging. Baby will love it also. Some other ideas to get a post pregnancy body moving physically:

  • "Mommy and me" swimming classes – babies love to swim and it's great muscular and aerobic exercise for mom too.
  • Join a women’s boot camp or fitness club that offers onsite babysitting services.
  • Sign up for regular yoga classes to stretch the body and relax the mind.

Mental Fitness is Essential

According to the National Women's Health Information Center, postpartum depression, also known as the baby blues, affects as many as 10% of all pregnancies. With odds of 1 in 10, it is essential that every new mom takes care of mind fitness as well as physical health.

Mental exercises can actually be easier than one might think. An open dialogue with husband or partner is very important. Having other females to talk with about mommy and baby issues is also a good idea. For new mothers without sisters, mothers, or mother in laws, look for a support group for first time moms.

No matter what, to keep depression at bay following the birth of a baby, be sure to get dressed every day, go outside and interact with other adults on a regular, if not daily basis.

The Mind + Body Connection

There is a strong and relevant connection to mind and body health, and this rule applies to all humans, not just new mothers. When the body is physically fit, the mind is more at peace. When the mind is calm, stress free and harmonized, the body will find it easier to move itself to better physical health. To achieve a happy marriage of mind and body fitness, try these simple ideas:

  • For at least the first few months, the only priorities should be mom and baby.
  • Housework should not be a priority. Let a spouse, friend or mother help out with daily chores.
  • Eat a balanced diet daily which will promote ideal body weight and keep depression at bay through stable blood sugar levels.
  • Try self guided meditation – just 10 minutes each day will have a dramatic effect on mental and physical health.
  • Allow for "me" time at least 15 minutes each day - read a magazine, enjoy a cup of cocoa or take a long, hot bath.
