What is Kripalu Yoga?Learn How Every Body Can Benefit From Kripalu Yoga.
Kripalu Yoga is designed to adapt to all body types, ages, fitness levels, and interests.
When searching for a particular yoga style, it can be overwhelming and confusing to distinguish one type of yoga from another. THE EMPHASIS OF KRIPALU YOGALike most yoga styles and traditions, Kripalu Yoga uses classic asanas (which is the Sanskrit work for yoga postures) , pranayama (breathwork), development of a quiet mind, and the practice of relaxation. Kripalu Yoga classes emphasize on following the flow of prana (life-force energy), practicing compassionate self-acceptance, developing witness consciousness (observing the activity of the mind without judgment), and taking what is learned “off the mat” and into daily life. Whether you are looking for something gentle or extremely vigorous, Kripalu Yoga can cater to any level of difficulty for any age, fitness level or body type. Whereas other styles involve demanding circumstances like very hot studios or a lot of upside down postures (inversions), Kripalu has a focal point of encouraging it's students to connect with themselves and tap into a state of consciousness in which their mind is communicating directly with their body so they can be fully present for themselves during their yoga practice. WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A KRIPALU YOGA CLASSA standard Kripalu Yoga class begins with a centering and pranayma. The breathwork helps focus the mind on the body as well as the present moment. It can also invigorate the central nervous system and help increase blood flow to and from the heart, preparing the body for movement. Following the centering and breathwork is a series of postures that are dedicated to building strength, stamina, flexibility, and focus. The class ends with a period of deep relaxation to revitalize the respiratory, nervous, endocrine, digestive, and other major systems of the body. Kripalu's philosophies are sensitive to the fact that everday is a different experience for both the body and mind. While some days call for something vigorous and challenging, other days may need a yoga class that is more gentle and easy. Developing a concious awareness with what your body needs in the moment is key aspect of praciting Kripalu Yoga. Abandoning judgement of the mind and body is invigiroating for both the spirit and the body. As yoga becomes more popular and mainstream the myths can become more overwhelming to a new practioner. Kripalu Yoga is a great place to start if you've never practiced yoga. With the key focal point of compassionate self acceptance this style of yoga will most likely prove to be the beginning of a life long yoga practice.
